1. No one knows when water will be safe to drink again.

This to me should be a firing offense. I’m sorry, Mr. Public Official. Get the fuck out of your chair right now, and let us put someone in that chair who can credibly answer questions like this.

And why is the spiller still in business? I look forward to a day, and it won’t be all that long, when our awareness of who is doing what in our communities is such that when someone starts shitting them up, the whole community turns to them and says GET OUT.

According to McIntyre, the company provided no notice of the spill and hasn’t been in communication with the water company since.

So they’re just waiting for the company to contact them?

Not only unsafe for drinking, but also for bathing, laundry etc…only good for flushing toilets.

Wash coal of impurities. Clean Coal. Winner. Except those downstream.

Er, if all this is is a 4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol spill, doesn’t it have like a half life in a river of like 5 days? And a TD50 of like half of salt (i.e., you aren’t going to die from it)?

Yeah, it stinks and hurts, but it’s not “no one knows when the water will be ever safe again!”. It’ll be safe in a few weeks. Granted, it’ll stink for months, but more people will be upset that the plant has to close down and costs the town the jobs.

Found this via reddit, from someone claiming to be a chemist:

In short: Scary, but blown completely out of proportion. Hopefully someone will be able to use this to finally get it through those miner’s heads that safety regs are our friends (before something really bad spills) but… doubt it.

In WV, the company is supposed to “self report”.
It didn’t.
